This Event Has Been Canceled

We regret to inform you that the Nov. 4, 2010 Jepson Leadership Forum event has been canceled due to deteriorating developments in Haiti. Partners in Health physician David Walton was scheduled to fly from Port au Prince to the States Wednesday in order to present in Richmond Thursday evening. He has decided he cannot in good conscience leave his patients at this time.

Walton canceled his Forum appearance by email, saying: “I'm here in Haiti and things are deteriorating rapidly.” He wrote that he is seeing more patients with cholera and that he expects some impact from the hurricane and “a really catastrophic situation is about to become unimaginably worse.”

His email statement included: “Our staffing is stretched to dangerously-thin levels because of the cholera epidemic, and if I leave there will be patients that will be unattended and will have no medical staff to care for them, and I'm certain patients will die if I'm not here. … I really don't think I can leave Haiti. I can't let patients perish because of my absence or let the situation deteriorate even more. I have never been in a situation like this before, and to be honest Haiti has never seen anything like this before. It’s truly horrific. I'm really sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Jepson will explore the possibility of rescheduling this event. Thank you for your interest.
