Claude Moore Grant Will Fund Project on Responsible Leadership in Health Care

The Claude Moore Charitable Foundation made a grant of $80,000 for a two-year project entitled “Preparing for Responsible Leadership in Health Care,” directed jointly by Kenneth Ruscio, dean of the Jepson School, and biology professor John Vaughan, director of pre-health education.

The project aims to prepare students interested in health-care careers for leadership roles by increasing their understanding of, and ability to address, ethical and policy challenges in health care. The grant will extend the interdisciplinary project initiated by the grant from the Keck Foundation and will ultimately make it possible to offer a minor in medical humanities.

The grant will fund several specific initiatives, including the following: the offering of a two-semester Healing Arts course on a permanent basis, as part of the proposed medical humanities minor; the creation of a new course on Leadership and Ethical Decision Making in Health Care for inclusion in the curriculum of both the Jepson School and the proposed medical humanities minor in the School of Arts and Sciences; the establishment of Claude Moore internships enabling students to apply the skills they gain through these courses; and the inauguration of a Claude Moore lecture as part of the Jepson Forum to extend the consideration of ethical leadership in medicine across the campus and the community.
