October 16, 2006
It is with great pleasure that I bring greetings to
the readers of @Jepson. Most of you have already received a
communication from me indicating that I have been appointed the
interim dean for the academic year 2006-07 as a search committee
looks for Ken Ruscio’s replacement. Ken had the high honor of being
appointed president of Washington and Lee University in the spring.
As most of you also know, I have been with the Jepson
School since it opened in 1992, serving successively as untenured
faculty member, tenured associate professor, professor, associate dean
and now interim dean. That long history has generated in me a deep
love for the institution and what it stands for.
This edition of the newsletter demonstrates perfectly
all that is good about the Jepson School. There are articles on a
current student who is making her mark and several Jepson alumni who
are exhibiting exceptional talent and initiative. There is a piece on
one of our impressive new faculty members.
On the programmatic side, the story on the two new
residential leadership-learning communities suggests that the Jepson
School remains a vital center of intellectual activity. Our Center for
Leadership in Education is also reprising its highly successful
leadership-training program for high school administrators. Jepson has
been and remains a special place.
As a member of the Jepson family, I want to encourage
you to participate in the life of the School. We provide numerous
opportunities for you to do so. This year our
Jepson
Leadership Forum bears the thematic title “Science, Society and
Leadership” and offers a remarkable line-up of events. You should have
received a Forum brochure, but if not, contact us at
Jepson@richmond.edu and we
will be happy to send you one.
On November 13 at 4 p.m. we are having a special
panel on presidential leadership in higher education, to be followed
by the unveiling of a portrait of former dean Ruscio. And, of course,
we hope to see all of you at our
Homecoming pre-tailgate on October 28
at 10:30 a.m.
Please feel free to contact me at any time if you
wish to discuss any matter pertaining to the Jepson School. Your input
is always valued.
J. Thomas Wren
Interim Dean
