From the Dean

Sandra J. Peart

As I write this note, we’re busy preparing for my favorite event of the year: Finale. The Jepson Class of 2018 includes 73 majors and 11 minors. They’ve conducted research on topics like sustainability and disease prevention in South America, represented Jepson in the Ethics Bowl competition and at national conferences, and logged more than 17,000 collective hours at internship sites ranging from the U.S. Capitol Building to a hospital in Tanzania. Most importantly, they’ve learned to reason ethically, to engage in civil debate, and to critically analyze context in decision-making.

As part of the Jepson Initiative, we’re showcasing faculty expertise and Jepson students and alumni to increase Jepson’s brand nationally and abroad. I have included four quick ways you can support the Jepson Initiative, and want to challenge you to do at least two of them today.

Sincerely,

Sandra J. Peart
Dean, Jepson School of Leadership Studies
University of Richmond

Dr. Gary L. McDowell

Celebrating the career of Dr. Gary L. McDowell

At Jepson, Dr. Gary McDowell is known for teaching classes like Leadership and the Law, Folk Music and Protest Thought, Statesmanship, and — of course — Leadership and the Humanities. He's also known for bringing eminent speakers and leaders to University of Richmond through the John Marshall International Center for the Study of Statesmanship. After 15 years teaching students in leadership studies, political science, and law at the University of Richmond, Dr. McDowell will retire from the Jepson School following the 2017–18 academic year.

As members of the Jepson community, we know you'll join us in celebrating Dr. McDowell's distinguished career and contributions to the Jepson School. Stay tuned for more on Dr. McDowell's accomplishments and how the Jepson School is honoring him.

2018 Jepson Research Symposium

2018 Jepson Research Symposium

On April 20, students, faculty, staff, and parents gathered in Jepson Hall for the seventh annual Jepson Research Symposium. The annual symposium highlighted the breadth and also the depth of a leadership studies education.

“A dominant theme across lots of scholarship in Jepson — from the faculty and the students — is a focus on studying really important, contemporary social issues,” said Dr. Crystal Hoyt, Jepson School associate dean for academic affairs, in her opening remarks.

Faculty in the News

Did you catch Dr. Julian Hayter's interview with Anderson Cooper on CBS '60 Minutes' this March? Dr. Hayter, who is serving as a member of Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney's Monument Avenue Commission, shared his expert knowledge of leadership and history to inform the national debate surrounding Confederate monuments.

Throughout the School, Jepson faculty contribute their expertise to critical social, political, and cultural issues facing our world today by serving as resources for local, national, and international media outlets. In January, Dr. Jessica Flanigan penned a feminist case to support a Universal Basic Income in Slate, and in April, Dr. Williamson published an essay in the Boston Review reflecting on where we are 50 years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

2018 Jepson EDGE Institute

Jepson EDGE Institute

Forty-four Jepson School alumni returned to campus in February to lead the 2018 Jepson EDGE Institute. In the weeks leading up to this year’s Institute, Jepson alumni and seniors spoke to juniors in the new Jepson Internship class about how to craft an effective elevator pitch, so students were more prepared than ever to build connections with alumni at EDGE.
