Jepson School hosts regional ethics competition Nov. 21 on Richmond campus

The Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond will host the Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl Nov. 21.

Top-scoring teams from this event and other regional bowls will advance to the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) National Championship, which will be held March 4, 2010 in Cincinnati at the 19th Annual Meeting of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics, a conference that brings together ethicists from across academia and the professions.  Each year the national competition hosts 32 student teams from colleges across the country.

Fourteen undergraduate teams will compete in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl at the Jepson School. Each team will receive a set of cases in advance of the competition and work with a faculty mentor to prepare for questions on these cases. Like television's College Bowl, but with an ethical twist, the competition presents students with hard questions on controversial social issues and moral dilemmas in personal or professional life. At the event, judges evaluate the intelligibility, relevance and thoughtfulness of teams' responses.

Teams competing in the 2009 Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl are Campbell University; Clemson University; College of Notre Dame, Maryland; Lynchburg College; St. Andrews Presbyterian College; University of Baltimore; University of Maryland, College Park; University of North Carolina, Charlotte; University of Miami (two teams);  University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (two teams); University of South Carolina, Aiken; and West Virginia University.

National Ethics Bowl rules for 2008-2009 will be used for the fall 2009 regional competition, amended only to fit the smaller size of the regional competition. There are 15 ethics cases that teams will prepare for the fall 2009 competition. Schedule for the day.
