University Community Mourns Professor Fredric M. Jablin

November 1, 2004

The Jepson School family mourns the death of Dr. Fredric M. Jablin, professor and E. Claiborne Robins Distinguished Chair of Leadership Studies. He died Saturday, Oct. 30.

"The Jepson School is saddened and shocked at the loss of our colleague, Fred Jablin," said Dean Kenneth Ruscio.

"He was a dedicated scholar, a respected teacher and a friend to all of us. He provided guidance and support to everyone and personified the school's central mission of service to others. Our prayers and sympathies are with his children and his many friends."

Students gathered Sunday night for a candlelight vigil. A formal campus memorial service in honor of Dr. Jablin is being planned.

Information about how to honor and remember Dr. Jablin and his family will be posted as soon as possible at www.richmond.edu/jepson.

A respected senior member of the faculty and one of the nation's leading scholars in leadership studies and communications, Dr. Jablin came to Richmond from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994 to help establish the new Jepson School of Leadership Studies. He served as Acting Dean during a pivotal time period, 2001-02, when the School was preparing to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

A mark of the high level of his scholarship, he was on numerous editorial boards for professional journals and received many awards for research and teaching. He conceived of the Jepson Dissertation Awards and this year was chairing that effort to honor the work of young scholars in the field of leadership studies. At Texas, he  served on master and Ph.D. committees and stayed in touch with his many former students, some of whom are professors around the country. At the time of his death, he was exploring a new research interest, concepts of courage and leadership.
