Donchian Foundation Supports New Ethics Initiative, National Session on Professional and Applied Ethics
September 1, 2005
The development of critical thinking and ethical reasoning have been at the heart of the Jepson School's curriculum since its founding in 1992. A investment by the Donchian Foundation furthers Jepson's role as a center for ethics education.
The Donchian Foundation will award $125,000 over three years to support student and faculty research and to convene a national symposium on professional and applied ethics.
The symposium, planned for 2008, will attract leading scholars as well as members of the professions and leaders from various fields. The sessions will focus on professional and applied ethics and will reflect the latest insights into the challenges facing corporate and political leaders in today’s world.
The funding will also support faculty and student research on ethics, as well as a number of student programs.
"Developing the ability to identify and respond to ethical dilemmas should be a part of every student’s education, especially
to those students who aspire to positions of leadership,” said Dean Kenneth P. Ruscio. “Not only will this gift support our educational program, it will enable us to shape the national conversation on this most important and timely subject.”
The Jepson School is a scholarly center for the study
and teaching of ethics and leadership. The Jepson School
faculty includes Dr. Joanne B. Ciulla, an international
authority on ethical leadership who holds the Coston
Family Chair in Leadership and Ethics. Also teaching at
Jepson are Dr. Terry Price, whose research focuses on
applied ethics, and Dr. J. Donelson Forsyth, who holds
the Colonel Leo K. and Gaylee Thorsness Chair in Ethical
Leadership.
The Donchian Foundation embraces projects that further the legacy of
Richard Davoud Donchian, who enjoyed a long and lauded career in finance. A pioneer in the intricate world of commodity futures money management, he was dubbed “father of modern commodities trading methods," for inventing a system that monitored trends. In support of his legacy, the foundation invests in the areas of "ethical leadership in business and community affairs; education, personal development and literacy; and moral, ethical & spiritual advancement in all areas of life.
The directors also emphasize opportunities for significant and lasting social improvement.
Founded in 1992, the Jepson School is itself an innovation. Creating a separate school as a nexus for the study of leadership and rigorous academics was the vision of Robert S. Jepson Jr., a business leader who understood the complexities of leadership. The founding faculty created the Jepson School of Leadership Studies with the mission to develop people who understand the moral responsibilities of leadership and are prepared to exercise leadership in service to society. The Jepson School seeks to advance the understanding of leadership in society through theoretical, philosophical and empirical study.
