Glenn Proctor
The Richmond
Times-Dispatch is the primary daily
newspaper in Richmond, Va., and is commonly
considered the "newspaper of record" for events
occurring in much of the state. Founded in 1850, the
Times-Dispatch is a primary daily paper in
Petersburg, Chester.
Hopewell,
Colonial Heights,
Charlottesville,
Lynchburg, and
Waynesboro, as well as for many rural areas of the
state. The paper has a daily circulation of
187,409 and a Sunday Circulation of 228,262.
Glenn
Proctor, a journalist for over three decades, is vice
president and executive editor of the Richmond
Times-Dispatch, a position he has held since
November 2005. He received the 2007 Legacy Award from
the National Association of Black Journalists.
Previously, he was an associate editor at
The Star-Ledger in Newark. He was also the
newspaper’s assistant managing editor/local news and
city editor. Before joining The Ledger, Proctor
was assistant managing editor/metro at the Rochester
Democrat & Chronicle, night metro editor and
business editor at The Louisville Courier-Journal
and a suburban reporter, business reporter and night
metro editor at the Akron Beacon Journal. He was
also a reporter and city editor at the Quad-City
Times in Davenport, Iowa.
While in Ohio, Proctor was an adjunct journalism
professor at Kent State University for several years. In
the late ‘80s, he also created a series of diversity and
management workshops that he continues to present around
the country.
At the Beacon Journal, Proctor was part of
the team that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1987 for
coverage of the Goodyear takeover. He was a Pulitzer
juror in 2006, 2001 and 2000.
In other experience, he was with the Philadelphia office
of United Press International and was press
secretary for former U.S. Rep.-Fla. Dan Mica. He began
his career as a reporter for the Daily Local News
in West Chester, Pa.
A frequent speaker on journalism careers, management and
motivation, Proctor is a board member of the
Oakland-based Maynard Institute of Journalism Education.
He also serves on the national advisory boards of the
Kent State University School of Journalism and the
American Press Institute. He previously served on the
board of the Associated Press Managing Editors.
For the past three years, Proctor has been an
executive-in-residence for the four-week Maynard
Management Program at Northwestern University’s Kellogg
Business School and also works with Maynard’s Media
Academy program for new managers.
He is a mentor to dozens of journalists and other career
professionals around the country.
As a Marine and Vietnam veteran, Proctor spent six years
on active duty and six years as a reservist, leaving the
Corps as a gunnery sergeant.
