Science, Society and Leadership
Jepson Leadership Forum 2006-07
Since the beginning of civilization, humans
have endeavored to make sense of the natural world and the forces of
nature. Centuries of exploration, discovery and advancement have
shaped the global economy and human understanding of the solar
system, the world and its creatures. Science unveils new knowledge
and unlocks old mysteries and is one of our central mechanisms for
understanding our world.
Science provides purity and simplicity, the
certainty of research methodology, data and facts. At the same time,
science also creates complex challenges for modern society. The
application of scientific knowledge can pose fundamental moral
dilemmas. The demands of science often require painful choices
regarding the allocation of resources. Such challenges cannot be
resolved by harking to scientific "truth" but instead require
complex personal soul-searching and societal deliberations that
weigh the various consequences.
The study of leadership intersects with the
practice of science in an attempt to explore the dynamics of
individuals, groups, organizations and societies as they seek to
address such important matters. The Jepson Leadership Forum will
explore these relevant and exciting issues this season. Forums are
free and open to the public and begin at 7 p.m.
