Political Science:
Where New Knowledge Collides with Public Policy
Feb. 7, 7 p.m., Jepson Alumni Center
Donald Kennedy
Editor of Science and one of the nation’s most thoughtful authorities on the intersection of science and public policy
When it was announced that Donald Kennedy would become editor of the nation’s respected juried scientific journal, the chair of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences lauded Kennedy as an excellent choice given his
"broad understanding of current science issues, wealth of experience in government and university, and incomparable insight." Kennedy, a biologist who holds a doctorate from Harvard University, will lead a conversation about the role of science in public policymaking and the responsibility of citizens to understand science. The former president of Stanford University and a former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, he has deep scholarly and professional experience. He will address the role of science in public debate and the role of public debate upon science in a society in which resolving conflicts is an essential part of bringing forward scientific knowledge to serve society and advance the common good.
