From the Dean

Sandra J. Peart

January arrives with renewed energy and enthusiasm for our investigation into the processes of leadership. This spring, we’ll welcome alumni back to campus for the annual Jepson EDGE Institute; share in thoughtful conversations with visitors, including bestselling author Isabel Wilkerson and Leader-in-Residence Dr. Ken Ruscio; host the second meeting of our Jepson School Executive Board of Advisors; and celebrate student scholarship at the Jepson Research Symposium. In my role as Interim Provost, I will learn a great deal about the overall operations of the University and the special place that the Jepson School holds within it. As we look forward to the School's 25th anniversary in 2017–18, we’ll honor our past and look to the future to grow and strengthen our study of leadership and ethics. Stay tuned for information about events and opportunities to get involved!

Finally, I hope you'll take a moment to review Dr. Crutcher's response to the recent executive order issued by President Trump that targets refugees and immigrants from seven countries in Africa and the Middle East. The Jepson School stands with the rest of our University family in its commitment to supporting affected members of our community.

Wishing you strength and wisdom in the new year,

Sandra J. Peart
Dean, Jepson School of Leadership Studies

25th Anniversary Logo

Since its founding, the Jepson School has prepared students to take on the ethical and moral responsibilities of leadership and to live fully. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we continue to dedicate ourselves to The Jepson Vision for Ethical Leaders. We invite you to share with us your stories about how your education in leadership ethics impacts your life. We'll share the stories on our website and social media accounts throughout our anniversary year.

Jepson School launches new Take 5 video series

Through the new Jepson Take 5 video series, Jepson students interview the renowned experts and scholars who visit campus as part of the popular Jepson Leadership Forum speaker series. In the informal one-on-one interviews, students pose questions about topics outside of the speaker's presentation topic. Discussions range from career advice to scholarship to politics.

Civil War Leadership Students Return to Gettysburg

Gen. Jack Mountcastle points out geographical landmarks at Gettysburg battlefields. The text “leadership when lives are on the line” stands out in bold, black ink on the Gettysburg trip packet given to Jepson Civil War Leadership students. Every other year since fall 2004, Dr. Al Goethals and Gen. Jack Mountcastle have taken the Civil War Leadership students to the Gettysburg battlefields. The trip illuminates battlefield leadership and decision-making.

“The trip solidified my ‘ground truth,’ the understanding one gains when faced with the actualities of the terrain and landscape they have studied in class. It is one thing to analyze (and, frankly, judge) a leader’s decisions when removed from the situation they were in, but your understanding is deepened when faced with the reality of your surroundings. Maps can help you so much, but no map can truly do justice to the actual landscape,” said Sarah Abel, '17.
