Robert L. Burrus Jr. Fellows for Nonprofit Internships

Friends of Robert Burrus created the Robert L. Burrus Jr. Fellowship Program for Developing Leaders to honor the former chairman and senior partner of McGuireWoods LLP, who is  a member and former rector of the University’s board of trustees. Since the program’s inception in the summer of 2004, 11 Jepson students have been named Burrus Fellows.

Students planning to fulfill their required Jepson internship by working in unpaid positions for nonprofit organizations both in the United States and abroad may apply for the Burrus fellowships in the amount of $2,500 each. These fellowships benefit not only the students, but also the communities they serve through their nonprofit work. Fellows will be immersed in significant areas of social need in such a manner that they will learn from those in need and those who are engaged in finding workable solutions.

Those interested in applying for a fellowship must submit a description of their proposed internship. A selection committee will then review the applications and choose between five and seven recipients based upon the quality of the internships described and the anticipated benefit of the internships to both the student and the community. The selection committee reserves the right to withhold or withdraw the fellowship funding should a student decide to change his or her internship after being awarded a fellowship.
