Unit Transition Guide
for Jepson Students and Advisors
Class of 2011

In fall 2007, the Jepson faculty approved several curricular changes in response to the university’s adoption of the unit system. Because many students entered the Jepson School under the old curriculum, these changes will be gradually instituted.

What does this mean for individual students?

If you are a rising sophomore (class of 2011), you must meet all requirements of the new curriculum in order to graduate with a Jepson degree.

Leadership Studies Major
A minimum of 12 courses (or 11 units), including

  • LDST 101 Foundations of Leadership Studies
  • LDST 205 Justice and Civil Society
  • LDST 249 Research Methods (.5 units)
  • LDST 250 Critical Thinking (.5 units)
  • LDST 251 Group Dynamics
  • LDST 300 Theories and Models of Leadership
  • LDST 450 Leadership Ethics
  • LDST 488 Internship
  • Four additional advanced courses numbered above 300

Advanced coursework may include one collaborative independent study, one student-initiated independent study, one semester of honors thesis work, or one semester of senior thesis work. Majors may count a maximum of one study abroad course toward the advanced course requirement.

Leadership Studies Minor
A minimum of 9 courses (or 8 units), including:

  • LDST 101 Foundations of Leadership Studies
  • LDST 205 Justice and Civil Society
  • LDST 249 Research Methods (.5 units)
  • LDST 250 Critical Thinking (.5 units)
  • LDST 251 Group Dynamics
  • LDST 300 Theories and Models of Leadership
  • LDST 450 Leadership Ethics
  • Two advanced courses numbered above 300, not including independent study or thesis work  

Minors may count a maximum of one study abroad course toward the advanced course requirement.
