Unit Transition Guide
for Jepson Students and Advisors
Class of 2009

In fall 2007, the Jepson faculty approved several curricular changes in response to the university’s adoption of the unit system. Because many students entered the Jepson School under the old curriculum, these changes will be gradually instituted.

What does this mean for individual students?

If you are a rising senior (class of 2009), the curricular changes should have no effect on the requirements you must meet to graduate with a Jepson degree. Given the sequencing of courses, you should have only LDST 450 Leadership Ethics and, perhaps, one or more advanced courses to complete.

Leadership Studies Major
A minimum of 13 courses, including:

  • LDST 101 Foundations of Leadership Studies
  • LDST 205 Justice and Civil Society
  • LDST 250 Critical Thinking
  • LDST 251 Group Dynamics
  • LDST 300 Theories and Models of Leadership
  • LDST 389 Research Methods (or approved substitute)
  • LDST 450 Leadership Ethics
  • LDST 488 Internship
  • Five additional advanced courses numbered above 300

Advanced coursework may include one collaborative independent study or one student-initiated independent study. It may also include one semester of honors thesis or one semester of senior thesis work. Majors may count a maximum of two study abroad courses toward the advanced course requirement.

Leadership Studies Minor
A minimum of  8 courses, including:

  • LDST 101 Foundations of Leadership Studies
  • LDST 205 Justice and Civil Society
  • LDST 250 Critical Thinking
  • LDST 251 Group Dynamics
  • LDST 300 Theories and Models of Leadership
  • LDST 450 Leadership Ethics
  • Two advanced courses numbered above 300

Minors may count one independent study and a maximum of one study abroad course toward the advanced course requirement.
