Among the many academic honors and
achievements of the Jepson Class of 2003
were these:
Fulbright Scholarship: Joshua Walker was
awarded a Fulbright student grant to study
in Turkey for the 2003-04 academic year. He
was among 1,090 people selected for grants
from more than 5,200 applications. Josh will
spend the year in Ankara at the Middle East
Technical University under the supervision
of Dr. Huseyin Bagci, a leading
international relations scholar. He will
study the country's political leadership and
the ideological question of where Turkey
fits in as the nation forges a path between
Western secular democracy and Islamic
statehood. His work in Ankara will be a
follow-up to his senior project thesis,
"Leading a 'Torn' Country: Turkey 's
Ideological and Civilizational Divide."
Story Award: Jepson senior Janelle Hubert
was the student recipient of the 11th annual
Story Award. She was honored for her work
with National Student Partnerships. Jepson
junior Neil Singh was one of the first
recipients of the Special Partnership Award
for his work with the Habitat for Humanity Merriewood Miracle.
Graduation Weekend Speakers: Jepson major
Joshua Walker and Jepson minor Marianne
Kinney were two of three students selected
to speak at graduation weekend events. Josh
spoke at the University’s Candlelight
Ceremony on Saturday, May 3, and Marianne
was the baccalaureate speaker on graduation
morning.
The E. Bruce Heilman Leadership Award:
Jepson major Joshua Walker received the E.
Bruce Heilman Leadership Award, awarded to a
graduating senior who has demonstrated
outstanding character and leadership in
service to the University.
The Clarence J. Gray Achievement Award:
Jepson major Evan Baum was one of three
winners of the Clarence J. Gray Achievement
Award for Excellence in Scholarship and
Leadership, awarded to a graduating senior
who is a member of both Phi Beta Kappa (or
Beta Gamma Sigma) and Omicron Delta Kappa
(or Mortar Board) and who is judged to
have the outstanding four-year record in
scholarship and leadership in his or her
division.
James MacGregor Burns Award: Jonathan Zur
and Joshua Walker received James MacGregor
Burns Awards this year at the Jepson School's Senior Awards Ceremony. The award is
given to a graduating senior in recognition
of his/her accomplishments as a student in
the Jepson School of Leadership Studies. The
winner of the award must be someone who has
demonstrated an outstanding grasp of the
body of knowledge associated with leadership
studies; excelled in his/her studies at the
university generally; been actively involved
in service to the school, university, and
community; shown an ability to generalize
and apply leadership theory and research in
unique and imaginative ways; and displayed
the capacity to lead others and help others
lead themselves.
Servant Leader Award: Jonathan Zur received
the 2002-2003 Servant Leader Award. The
Jepson Student Government Association
presents the award annually to a member of
the Jepson community who best exemplifies
Robert Greenleaf’s model of a servant
leader.
Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society: Evan
Baum and Trevor MacDougall are members of
Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s most
prestigious academic honor society.
Omicron Delta Kappa Society: Evan Baum,
Scott Erwin, Marc Kaliser, Karen Puccia,
Jeffrey Vergales, Joshua Walker, and
Jeremiah Winters are members of the Omicron
Delta Kappa Society. OKK recognizes those
who have attained a high standard of
efficiency in collegiate activities and have
inspired other to strive for conspicuous
attainments along similar lines.
Mortar Board National Leadership Honor
Society: Evan Baum, Bethany Cooper, Timothy
Farley, Karen Puccia, and Joshua Walker were
awarded membership in Mortar Board, the
oldest national leadership honor society,
which recognizes leadership, service, and
academic achievement.
Who’s Who: Evan Baum, Jeffrey Vergales,
Joshua Walker, Jeremiah Winters, and
Jonathan Zur were named to Who’s Who in
American Colleges and Universities.
Leadership Studies Honor Society: The
Leadership Studies Honor Society recognizes
outstanding academic achievement in the
discipline of leadership studies. New
members are Evan Baum, Bethany Cooper,
Allison Householter, Patricia North, and
Katherine Ponzio.
Class of 1964 Scholarship: Jepson juniors
Ryan Babiuch and Colette Conner were awarded
the Class of 1964 Scholarship. Recipients
must display outstanding qualities of
character, leadership, and scholarship. The
scholarship is awarded to one student in
each of the four schools. Ryan was honored
as the Richmond College recipient and
Colette as the Jepson School recipient.
Quest III Honorable Mention: Jepson junior
Annie Williamson was recognized for her
Quest III entry, “Shall we dance?”
